December Board Meeting Happenings



BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The Board recognized the High School North Boy's Cross Country Team for being named Class A South Champs, Ocean County Champs, South Jersey Group 4 Champs, and an individual award to Captain Joe Kotran.

EAGLE SCOUTS
The Board of Education commended these High School East students for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.  They are: Andrew Osborne, James Osborne, Michael Palmerson, Nicholas Paulovich, Jonathan Case, and Patrick Bless.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS
The Board recognized the High School North Girls Cross Country Team for being named  A South Champions, Ocean County Champs, Group 4 State Sectional Champs, NJSIAA South Jersey and 6th Place in Meet of Champions.

CHAMPION TRAPSHOOTER
The Board recognized HSS student, Chad Anthony for being named State Trapshooting Champion at the 111th Annual NJ State Shoot presented by the NJ State Trapshooting Association.  He won all 11 trophies and the title of champion, his second, at the event held in May 2008.


SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER
The Board recognized two HS East teachers and coaches Jennifer Maniaci and Candice Schultz and a HSE freshman Ryan Gordon for their outstanding initiative, effort and time in successfully planning and executing the Steven Sprague Memorial 5K Run/Walk.  Steven was killed while working on the NJ Turnpike.  He was the brother of Taylor Madden, HSE student and Cross Country Captain.  These outstanding teachers and coaches spent a great deal of time with Taylor during her grief and wanted to do something to help her and Steven's family.  The Steven Sprague Memorial 5K Run/Walk was planned in less than 5 weeks.  Ryan spent countless hours building a website to get the information out and then processing all the applications as well as the finishing times.  Through their efforts, they managed to successfully plan and execute the race, which raised about $14,000 for Steven's infant daughter Abigail.

October Board Meeting Happenings


The BOE commended Carlie Himelman for her dedication and support to a mission in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico helping 225 families living at a dump. The organization provides various support- educational, medical, physical and spiritual. Carlie and her mother spent 10 days in June taking part in an effort to help people who scrounge for items they need for day to day living.

The Board of Education recognized High School North's National Merit Commended Students: Daniel Colins, Kathryn Huryk, John Lueck, Suresh Prakash, Nicolas Son for outstanding academic achievement.

Senior Vice President Nina Anuario presented a check to the HSN Media Center  from the  OceanFirst Foundation Media Center Grant for $25,000.00. HSN will use their grant to purchase "Study Island", a web-based assessment, instruction and diagnostic program for 125 Special Education students in the 10th and 11th grades. They will use a portion of their grant to purchase a 12-unit wireless computer lab for Special Education students as well. High School North  Media Center was selected from among 107 schools that applied. Sharon Keeton wrote the grant.
 

High School South's  Dave Corell introduces the South students and presented his case and campaign  buttons for Indian Tom for President! We expect the polls to be busy and the outcome to be in the spirit of maroon and white!

The Board would like to recognize HSS student Ashley Ward for participating in the Golden Key Music Festival at Carnegie Hall. Ashley was one of 700 young participants that was judged at an exceptional performance level as adjudicated by  the Golden Key Music Festival panel of judges and as exemplified by her performance at Carnegie Hall, New York City, May 2008.

September Board Meeting Happenings



CLOSE TO SAT PERFECT!
The Board of Education commended Tina Sankhla of High School North for being named a National Merit Semi-Finalist. Tina also went on to score an almost perfect 2380 on the SAT's. Congratulations to Tina on this amazing achievement.

AN ASPIRING SCREEN WRITER
The Board of Education commended HSE sophomore, Kaitlin LeGrand, for winning the Student Voices grand prize from the Asbury Park Press. Great job Katie!

BASEBALL CHAMPS
The HSN Baseball team and their coaches were commended by the Board of Education for winning the Group IV Sectionals State Baseball Championship last spring. All of the seniors from that winning team have gone on to college.

ARTIST AWARD
Katie Dougherty of HSN was commended for having her artwork selected for the 2009 Art Educators of NJ Calendar. The calendar is used to promote art education. Katie was encouraged by her teacher Robin Coveleski. Congratulations Katie!
